A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
