Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over Bots, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a new game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but features several key changes:
- Every squad has just 8 real players, with the rest made up of 32 bots.
- Activities done by human gamers grant full XP, while bot actions offer lower rewards.
- Just a pair of locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
- Features like Player tags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.
So essentially, the playlist delivers on its title: it's a laid-back version of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think there's nothing wrong, since it gives additional choices for players seeking alternative ways to enjoy the game. But, gaming history has shown one thing, it's that you can't please everyone. In other words, many BF6 players are upset.
Player Reactions: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," states a response to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking concept," says another. At the same time, in community forums, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," while another details all the issues they believe to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, adjust aiming after sprinting, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."
On the other hand, for every complaint, some gamers explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's very fun to warm up, real players keep it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," says a forum post. "The community doesn't understand that there are players who have lives and can't play this game all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," states another. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is great for me," while another applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Concerns and Player Input
Despite the support, players have constructive reasons to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have pointed out that it could increase queue times more extended for other modes due to the sheer number of playlists in the game already. Similarly, certain regions already encounter AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a required amount of human gamers, despite it focuses mostly on combat against bots.
Lastly, a major complaints is that a previous feature was meant to provide full XP, including AI matches, but that got canned when they tried to eliminate XP farming from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough seems like the community meeting them halfway, as per forum feedback. Another labels this addition as the developers "dropping the ball significantly, I had great enjoyment in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Will Changes Be Made?
Should the development team has demonstrated something so far with Battlefield 6, it's that they're listening and acting on feedback. Tasks being too difficult got fixed rapidly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, if their data shows this new playlist is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to make further modifications.
