Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.
The criminal group invaded the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, an official report indicated.
An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Community members informed journalists that the armed men then led a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.
