During a recent conversation, esteemed performer Fiona Shaw opened up about her diverse career spanning many years and memorable characters.

The Impactful Andor Monologue

When discussing her memorable eulogy scene in the Disney+ show Andor, Shaw revealed that the original script included more explicit wording. "I did say a distinct term in my speech," she clarified, "and the writer wanted the studio would approve it."

The performer detailed the unique filming conditions for this specific moment. "When I performed that speech, I was filmed by about 200 cameras to create a hologram. I was completely alone in a massive studio, with neither director nor crew members present in the room."

Classic Literature Projects

Regarding the upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Shaw expressed excitement about finishing production. "We recently completed shooting it," she stated, "and what an actor rarely witness is the completed movie."

The actress commended director Georgia Oakley as "really lovely and very assured." The filming took place in beautiful estates across the UK, including sites within Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

Shaw also reflected on her previous role in the 1995 adaptation of Austen's Persuasion, portraying Mrs. Croft. "The director had particular demands: no wigs and just candle illumination," she remembered. "He truly aimed to capture the experience of early 19th century life."

Wizarding World Reflections

In response to questions regarding her experience with the Harry Potter franchise, Shaw talked warmly about collaborating with the late Richard Griffiths. "He represented the most elegant, creative and talented man," she revealed. "He possessed the most mellifluous handwriting and on one occasion mailed me a note inviting me to lunch in ornate gothic script."

The actress portrayed Griffiths as constantly speaking and sharing fascinating anecdotes with both her and the young actors on set. "He had remarkable worldly understanding so we would sit enthralled to his stories."

Stage Performances

Talking about her New York stage role in the tragedy Medea, Shaw recalled how emotionally demanding the production was. "I encountered one of the chorus members three years later, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she shared.

The production had an extensive run, starting in Dublin, then traveling to England, followed by the American capital, the New York venue, and finally Broadway. "We grew quite bonded as a cast," she added.

Performance Philosophy

When questioned about her ability to transition between comedy and drama, Shaw explained that "humor unites people as it's about breaking conventions." However, she confessed that "the night before a comedy, I always rest badly, because you have to find the rhythm on the day."

Regarding her technique for tackling various roles, Shaw commented: "I find them all challenging. But even if the character you're portraying is rather different from you, there is frequently some aspect about them that you identify with."

Recent Work

Speaking about her recent performance in Hot Milk, Shaw characterized her character Rose as "a difficult person though you cannot perform anything from that viewpoint." The actress elaborated that Rose suffers from a functional neurological disorder that causes mobility issues.

"The character doesn't realize of the effect she creates on her daughter," Shaw noted. "All she knows is that she wants to improve. She's both benign and blind. Perhaps that's what most of us are."

Self-Perception

When told that viewers consider her ideal as gang boss roles, Shaw answered with amusement: "Goodness me! I'm really not intimidating. But maybe when infused with purpose, my features can appear formidable."

She added: "I am in life occasionally rather disorganized so perhaps it's therapeutic for me to play very intelligent, organized characters. I try to depict fascinating individuals so I never judge them. Don't be scared – come and say hello!"

Love for Language

Talking about her renowned performance of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Shaw conveyed her deep connection with words and verse. "I'm consistently devoted in the language," she declared, "since the indicators to everything are there in the choice of words."

She believes that "poetry represents the polished form of language, or the instant that's been preserved." As individuals reduce to what they truly want to say, it's frequently lyrical."

Voice Recording

Regarding her acclaimed audiobook performances, specifically Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Shaw shared that "I enjoyed recording Alice in Wonderland because I included all my acquaintances into it – personal companions and fellow performers."

The actress explained how she performed the caterpillar as channeling Alan Rickman, and characterized the Red Queen as reminiscent of Geraldine McEwan. "It consistently feels a privilege to record and perform literature," she concluded, "despite needing days and days of work."

Working with Terrence Malick

Recalling her experience working with renowned director Terrence Malick on his film Tree of Life, Shaw portrayed him as distinctive. "All that the director expresses and undertakes is unique," she observed.

The actress recounted a particular memory of their initial encounter: "He left a message on my answering machine which said, 'I wonder, would you come and help with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most unusual selection in the world."

Shaw also mentioned Malick's unusual approach of asking actors "Would you prefer to do this scene indoors or outdoors?" – questions rarely posed by different directors. "He exclusively used natural light," she added, "so you could either perform interior near glass or outside on the street."

Regarding the lengthy post-production, Shaw disclosed that "The director requires about three years to edit the film. I had been told by the producer after two years that I was probably one of the main characters, but by the time the film was released, I was nearly gone."

She concluded by describing Malick's unique process: "He builds this enormous structure, and he takes away many components. He fundamentally dismantles films."
