Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He fought the legal system and justice won.

A couple of months following being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” the nation's political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now seems destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Jailing

The convicted plotter – who has been under house arrest in his mansion while a number of legal procedures and challenges unfold – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the near future, amid increasing rumors that he will be moved to a notorious maximum security penitentiary.

Past Remarks on Convicts

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the conservative former military man displayed minimal mercy for the country's prison population.

“What’s the need to provide those dirtbags a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “Unless you desire to finish in prison, the only thing required is to avoid rape, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Facility Speculation

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, several of whom this week inspected the complex in an apparent bid to prevent the judiciary from banishing him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, said he predicted the elderly politician to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and feared his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious digestive issues – the outcome of a life-threatening assault during the last political campaign – meant it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is very grave. He cannot to manage if they take him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he commented, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the standard of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells containing 40 inmates: “That is virtually one square meter per detainee.

“We talked to the convicts and they protest, naturally, of the horrible cuisine,” continued the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the sole person voicing opinions ahead of the ex-leader's expected imprisonment.

Writing in a prominent newspaper, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the greatest unfairness in its history”.

“This is an wrong that gnaws the souls of many Brazilian citizens,” he stated.

Divided Public Opinion

It is possibly accurate due to the substantial backing Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. However his predicted jailing has also pleased the hearts of numerous others who think he should be jailed for conspiring to stop the elected leader from taking power – and additionally scheming to have him murdered.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the incumbent administration's Workers’ party, commented: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. No one wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to receive respectful care – but respectful handling while incarcerated. He must not carry on being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have long praising the severe handling of inmates, had unexpectedly woken up to their privileges. “Just now has the extreme right – which has repeatedly asserted that civil liberties should not be for criminals – opted to tour a prison to learn what conditions are actually like,” he stated.

“He is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, demeaning treatment”.

Potential Prison Environment

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently contains about thousands of prisoners, his expected location looks to be a close jail for officers and other “unique” inmates known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are much more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the stunning official residence, about a short distance away.

As per sources, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – approximately the dimensions of two parking spaces – and contains a 12 sq metre WC with a shower and a 130 square foot veranda. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a set and also a cooler in his cell as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” sources stated.

Political Responses

The lawmaker denounced the speculated proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will rule on his future in the {
