Jurgen Klopp says rejoining to coach Liverpool is theoretically possible.
The German coach, who stepped down from Anfield in 2024, indicated that rejoining the club is an option. The 58-year-old, after a transformative near-decade reign which brought a European Cup triumph and ending the club's long wait for three decades, currently occupies roles as head of global soccer for Red Bull and in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the league title in the previous campaign, though countless followers holding him in high esteem would welcome the possibility that he might come back one day. During an extensive chat, he explained to Steven Bartlett: “I declared I won't manage any other side in England. So that means should it be the Reds...absolutely. In theory, it could happen.”
“Being 58, which suggests the choice could be mine in a few years, I don’t know. Is a decision required immediately? In that case, I'd stay away. Fortunately, I don’t have to do that. I'll simply watch how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Questioned regarding what circumstances would need to occur to tempt his return to the touchline, Klopp admitted he isn't eager for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “I don’t miss coaching; No desire to be in the rain through long matches; No need for interviews four times, three times a week or constant media duties each week.
“No nostalgia for the changing area in that context, yet sharing a meal alongside the squad talking freely, is pleasant. We won a lot of games so there was often a very good mood at the club. I still have Van Dijk's laughter ringing in my ears for example.”
Commending Arne Slot
He commended regarding Arne Slot, praising him for the adjustments which secured the championship in the previous season. Liverpool have lost four consecutive matches across various tournaments following significant transfers, though he denied the suggestion it could be a decline.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker such as Wirtz, doubters will be silenced if spoken against. An outstanding player. [Hugo] Ekitike, incredible player. It’s a really good balanced team. Fans shouldn't fret regarding the Reds, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
He shared movingly about the death of Jota, whom he brought in during his tenure, and the effect at the club. The forward was killed in a road accident together with his sibling in July.
“How do you replace somebody like Diogo? It’s not about his on-field talent, it's his character. It's hard to picture the squad missing him. Putting it into words is tough regarding this. A profound tragedy for the entire squad too. No one within the club might employ it to justify results yet it's the reality. You walk in a dressing room which he filled completely. Handling this on a personal level is challenging. Unbearable.”
