Our team is verifying images and video posted earlier today that show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the images originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
