New York's next mayor states his intention to reside in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly after his triumph in November.
"My choice was based on the security of my family and the need to focusing my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
But his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.
Featuring cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
