The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final berth.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated the player following his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.
Under international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.
He has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club chase trophies to come.
After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
