Ibragim Ibragimov breaks into a smile as he reflects on how his clan's life has transformed since moving to England from Dagestan eight years ago.

"I adore it here," the Professional Fighters League competitor states.

"We frequently say, 'this is the country I ought to have been born in.'"

The young man left his home in the North Caucasus of Russia because his father believed a move covering more than 3,000 miles offered better professional prospects for him and his brothers.

The initial plan was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to complete school before enrolling in one of the nation's universities.

However, life now looks slightly different for the Ibragimov family.

Ibragim is now a professional MMA athlete and is seen as one of the prime prospects in the PFL, a leading MMA league.

His brothers have taken a separate route in athletics and have all been contracted by Manchester United – with Amir vying for a place in the first team.

"Our key goal for us is to extract everything out of our chosen fields," explains Ibragim.

"I desire them to represent every one of the best teams in the world. Now it is Man United, tomorrow it might be a different team."

From Grapplers to Football Prodigies

Situated in southern Russia, Dagestan has a mystical status among combat sports enthusiasts for producing a host of UFC titleholders in the past few years.

The region has a long history in grappling, excelling in the combat sambo discipline and creating numerous Olympic and world winners.

This achievement is no accident, though, as children from the region are often encouraged to begin combat sports, particularly wrestling, practically as soon as they can stand.

"As a young, my dad was constantly instructing me and my little brothers that we had to be powerful, first to protect yourself, your relatives, and your companions," says Ibragim.

"So we all got used to fighting, and that's why people knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's unsurprising."

"Amir was a very good wrestler. You can observe the move from wrestling to football; clearly, it benefited my little brothers a great deal."

"Many of the players he comes up against lack the same base he has. That's why he's stocky, strong and incredibly driven – due to wrestling."

Amir was just nine years old when he was put through his paces at Sheffield United. Unaware of his actual age, trainers grouped him with boys significantly older.

He was unfazed by the mistake and was perfectly capable competing against older players thanks to his experience in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the same age, apparently," remarks Ibragim.

Amir was signed, together with Ibragim's little brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's time in South Yorkshire was brief, though, as only weeks after signing for the Blades, Manchester United became aware of Amir's ability and he moved over the Pennines consequently.

"They faced Manchester United in a tournament and Amir scored a spectacular free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their scouts saw him play and selected him immediately."

Six years after joining the Manchester United club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the most youthful players in the club's records to practice with the first team when he did so in April 2023.

"Know what he said to me? 'Here is where I belong'," Ibragim reveals.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? Without a doubt. They need to allow all the young players play now."

"I don't think they would play less effectively than the current starters. I think the youngsters are hungrier than the current squad members."

Since then, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once part of the academy of Manchester City, have also transferred to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is gifted," continues Ibragim.

"He learned every skill quicker than everyone else. He's a solid defender. He's going to be like a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'The Dream' to Compete at the Theatre of Dreams

Ibragim has now moved to Manchester and dedicates most of his days sharpening his MMA abilities at a local gym.

In August, he spent three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, helping Islam Makhachev prepare for a November UFC title fight.

"I would never have thought I would be learning under Khabib," Ibragim admits.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we constantly used to look up to him when we were young."

"Now, I'm here in his gym and sparring alongside Islam Makhachev."

Fresh from training with two UFC titleholders from Dagestan, it is unsurprising Ibragim says he is desperate to claim a world title of his own one day.

But that does not stop him from occasionally dreaming of playing for United and stepping out on the historic turf at Old Trafford, much like his brothers.

"I owned a PlayStation at home and I always used to play as Man United, scoring with legendary players," he recalls.

"Today, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's like a fantasy realized."

"A fight at Old Trafford? It's a dream for me. I was discussing with the PFL guys about it to see if they could make it happen. It would be enormous."
