The Two Fatalities Named in Brown University Incident as Law Enforcement Press On With Hunt for Perpetrator.
Two students who were killed in Saturday’s violent attack on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their killer continued following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual questioned in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a ceremony on Sunday.
Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also shared sympathies online, stating: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, especially her parents.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.
What Happened
An additional nine individuals were injured in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man arrested in a search at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was being released.
“There is a killer at large,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”
Public Fear
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate renewed concern for our city”.
The assailant began shooting inside a lecture hall in the engineering building on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a police source told the news agency.
Officers that entered the inn seized two handguns and two ammunition clips when the suspect was taken into custody, as was reported.
Condition of the Injured
Of the nine hurt, one pupil was released from the hospital, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, officials reported on Sunday.
A private school, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Further Tributes
Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the group. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and peers,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the Umurzokov family, companions, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his bright future.”
Broader Statistics
Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents documented across the United States so far in this year, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
