Books for Companionship
Paul Bailey proved a social being, an excellent talker who adored lighthearted gossip, according to a fictional persona. Alongside pal author Beryl Bainbridge would watch the serial drama Coronation Street and discuss it over calls. This enjoyment of gossipy exchanges shines through in his books the book Trespasses (published in 1970) along with the title Peter Smart’s Confessions (dating to 1977). The two present a central male figure besieged by humorous, irritating, exaggerated personalities, often close relatives whose influence is inescapable. “Why would anyone desire normality?” queries Ralph’s mother within Trespasses when he reveals he is gay. Works That Evoke Laughter and Tears
Paul Bailey authored superbly on old age, at both ends of his writing journey. His initial fiction At the Jerusalem (from 1967) traces the life of Faith Gadny while she adapts to a nursing home, where other occupants supply compassion absent in employees, whose concern by asking “Why not view the TV, ladies?”. In his penultimate novel Chapman’s Odyssey (released in 2011), an aged patient switches between arguing with doctors (“I only drink superior wines”, he states when scolded for liver results) and experiencing a rush of recollections of his mother, lovers, literary figures like Dickens’s Pip to Austen’s Emma. Both books are filled with humorous dialogues yet shadowed by approaching finality. In his stories, smiles are deceptive. In that book, “the matron beamed, then stopped suddenly”; Mrs Gadny laughs nervously if her actions are questioned. Within Chapman’s Odyssey, Harry advises that “my grins are misleading”. Your laughter, nonetheless, is sincere.
For the Reality Behind the Stories
In addition to fiction, The author excelled as a skilled autobiographer, releasing two self-written volumes. the memoir An Immaculate Mistake (from 1990) stands as a masterpiece of reminiscence, its name coming from his mum’s statement that “You were our mistake. You ought not to be here, by rights.”. (“She was old now, and letting go of her secrets,” he comments. “She understood this would captivate me.”) Within these pages appear the sources of flawed, caring, annoying mothers and fathers within his fiction. It also paints a moving picture of a homosexual young man in that era, during a time of anti-gay laws, and his relatives considered it strange that a son would purchase flowers for his mum; and of an aspiring actor (Bailey acted prior to authoring) who memorized Hamlet at 15. His follow-up autobiography A Dog’s Life (published in 2004) focuses on existence alongside his mixed-breed dog Circe, his former partner David, his love for Romania—which inspired subsequent books such as Kitty and Virgil, the title Uncle Rudolf, as well as the book The Prince’s Boy—and heaps of rumors, including a tale involving author Iris Murdoch calling an audience member an “idiot”.
If You’re Pressed for Time
Paul Bailey’s books are mostly concise—the powerful Old Soldiers (1980) is barely 100 pages—but for something shorter, sample his verse from later years. The pair of volumes Inheritance (from 2019) and also Joie de Vivre (from 2022) exhibit his cleverness, sympathy, exactness in brief format. These poems contain mortality and existence. Two romantic motifs repeat: about his parent (“I’m closer to you now – / I need to tell you – / than I ever was in life”) and for his partner Jeremy Trevathan. In that piece, he writes of the joy of “watching an idiotic TV entertainment” together, concluding with: “It’s remarkable, this simple act of consuming cheese and wine as darkness falls.”
When Choosing Just One
There is little debate that Paul Bailey’s boldest work was the novel Gabriel’s Lament, a Booker Prize finalist in 1986. (He also judged the prize in 1982, a role he disliked.) This was the book the author was most proud of, although “it exhausted him completely”. It relates Gabriel Harvey’s story, with a missing mother and a father who becomes an insufferable elitist after inheriting wealth, and the two might be related. It serves as a portrait of London in the 1900s, a tale of emotional unraveling, and equally humorous and sorrowful similar to his entire output. To continue, it led to a follow-up, Sugar Cane (published in 1993), which Bailey researched by visiting brothels as an observer.
