US Admiral to Update Lawmakers as Bipartisan Scrutiny Intensifies Over Vessel Attack

A senior US Navy officer is scheduled to deliver a confidential update to lawmakers overseeing the military this Thursday, as they probe a US attack on a boat in the Caribbean Sea. This event, which reportedly targeted a craft transporting narcotics, allegedly involved a second strike that killed any survivors.

White House Defends Actions as Self-Defense

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, on the start of the week stated that the second strike was conducted “in self-defence” and in compliance with regulations pertaining to armed conflict. Bipartisan examination has mounted over a account that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth gave a spoken command in September to attack the vessel.

Democratic lawmakers have said the claims, initially disclosed last week, could constitute a violation of international law, and GOP members have also expressed their concerns about the legality of the strike on 2 September. The House and Senate military oversight panels have initiated investigations into the recent US armed engagements on boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean.

“Secretary Hegseth directed Adm [Frank M] Bradley to execute these military actions,” said Leavitt. “The commander worked well within his mandate and the law, directing the operation to ensure the boat was destroyed and the danger to the United States of America was removed.”

In her comments to reporters, Leavitt did not dispute the report that there were individuals who survived after the initial strike. Her justification came following ex-President Donald Trump a day earlier remarked he “would not have approved that – not a follow-up attack” when asked about the incident.

Mounting Congressional Unease and Administration Support

Monday evening, Hegseth wrote online: “Adm Mitch Bradley is an national hero, a consummate professional, and has my 100% support. I stand by him and the combat decisions he has made – on the September 2 mission and all others since.”

A thirty days following the engagement, Bradley was elevated from head of JSOC to chief of US Special Operations Command.

Anxiety over the administration’s armed actions against alleged narcotics-trafficking boats has been building in Congress, but particulars of this follow-on strike stunned many legislators from both parties and generated serious inquiries about the legality of the operations and the broader policy in the area, particularly toward Venezuela's leader Nicolás Maduro.

The lawmakers indicated they did not have confirmation whether last week’s report was true, and some Republicans were sceptical. Still, they stated the alleged targeting of survivors of an first missile strike presented grave issues and merited further scrutiny.

Administration and Military Leaders Reiterate Stance

The White House commented after the president on Sunday vigorously defended Hegseth. “Secretary Hegseth said he did not order the death of those two men,” Trump said. He continued, “And I believe him.”

Leavitt said Hegseth had conversed with congressional representatives who may have voiced some concerns about the reports over the weekend.

General Dan Caine, the chair of the military's top officers, also spoke over the weekend period with the bipartisan leaders heading the Congressional military committees. He reiterated “his faith in the seasoned commanders at every echelon”, Caine’s spokesperson said in a statement.

The release further noted that the conversation focused on “discussing the intent and legality of missions to disrupt illicit trafficking networks which threaten the safety and stability of the Americas”.

Legislative Figures Respond and Pledge Investigation

The top Senate Republican, John Thune, on Monday broadly defended the operations, echoing the White House line that they were necessary to stop the influx of illicit drugs into the US.

Thune stated the committees in the legislature would look into what occurred. “I don’t think you want to make any conclusions or inferences until you have complete information,” he said of the 2 September attack. “We’ll see where they lead.”

After the news article, Hegseth wrote on the end of the week that “misleading reporting is delivering more false, provocative, and disparaging coverage to discredit our incredible service members fighting to protect the homeland”.

“Our ongoing missions in the Caribbean are legal under both American and international law, with all actions in accordance with the law of armed conflict – and sanctioned by the most qualified legal advisors, throughout the chain of command,” Hegseth wrote.

The top Senate Democrat, Chuck Schumer, called Hegseth a “national embarrassment” over his reaction to detractors. Schumer called for that Hegseth release the video of the strike and testify under oath about what happened.

The GOP lawmaker for Mississippi, Roger Wicker, the chair of the Senate military panel, pledged that his panel’s inquiry would be “done by the numbers”.

“We’ll discover the ground truth,” he added, stating that the ramifications of the report were “serious charges”.

The 2 September engagement was part of a sequence carried out by the US military in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean as Trump has directed the deployment of a fleet of naval vessels near Venezuela, including the biggest US carrier. Over 80 people were killed in the series of attacks.
