A prominent industry organisation last month published a comprehensive series of new proposals in different fields to help exporters deal with new bureaucratic hurdles that has hampered the export of products.

Its internal research indicated that a majority of business members agreed that the existing agreement was impeding business expansion.

A range of additional sectors could, feasibly, see a similar approach – convergence with internal market standards – in exchange for reducing post-exit friction across manufacturing, in automotive, industrial chemicals, or for example in VAT procedures.

Continental Perception

European capitals were underwhelmed by the lack of ambition in the previous recalibration, specifically the UK dismissal of ideas put forward by some analysts regarding the virtual readmission of UK products to the single market.

At home, the administration also expects being outflanked on Brexit by one opposition party, but additionally others, which is targeting its traditional heartlands in May's elections.

The Prime Minister's latest comments are borne of a confluence of business needs, electoral strategy and global dynamics as the UK embarks upon a year that will mark the decade milestone of the historic Brexit referendum.
