While Beachgoers Fled Danger, Popular Image Depicts Rescuer Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her own backyard. On a recent weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, heard loud noises echoing around the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was too light and no one could see them,” she explains. She left her residence, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw made it clear trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the street, speaking to a pair who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she became aware of someone moving up at her rear. The person was a rescuer, sprinting towards Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to escape from, and hauling that big kit and unshod … He moved into something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would instruct you to run in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally full throttle racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis

The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of instances of courage in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, law enforcement and medical teams caring for numerous those hurt.
